Welcome to Let's Pray! As parents, we're entrusted with a really sacred task, to share the love of Jesus with our children and teach them how to walk as His disciple. We can do all sorts of wonderful things to teach them about Jesus, and we should, but when we make space in our life together for prayer that's when we make space for our children to meet Jesus and grow in relationship with Him.
This site is intended to offer some ideas and resources for making prayer an everyday part of your family life. Every family is different, each child is different and seasons come and go as children grow up so some ideas in here will suit your family more than others, and that is okay!
As you explore the ideas presented here keep a couple of things in mind. Children thrive on ritual – just think of how much more settled they are if you have a good bedtime routine! This is true when it comes to family prayer as well so don't be overwhelmed by trying too many ideas. As far as prayer in daily life is concerned, it's better to choose a couple of ideas and do them consistently. Children also love to be involved – so let them help you plan family prayer, set up the prayer table and come up with new ideas. Let them share ownership of your time together and keep an open heart because God will speak to you through your little ones.
Of course, then there are the celebrations of Easter, Christmas and so on. These are wonderful opportunities to build tradition but also to try new things as your family grows from year to year! So, move with the Spirit and be creative!
Here are a few other tips:
~Look for opportunities to pray spontaneously and use the gifts of the Spirit.
~Do more than just model prayer, actually pray.
~Create the space, leave the rest to God.
~Talk about what God says in prayer… make it normative.
~Be ready to laugh! Life with kids is often funny and God laughs too.
Finally, as you come alongside your children in prayer, we are confident that you too will be drawn ever deeper into relationship with Jesus. Be ready! Be expectant!
